Sci Fi

March Meetup

Time - 11 AM
Date - 25th March 2018
Venue - CAARA Café @British Council

This time we are meeting to discuss about books from the SCI FI genre. I am not a big fan or let’s put it this way not very aware and haven’t read much about SciFi. So for those of you who sale in the same boat – so here are some people who can help us with some recommendations for the theme.

Shwetank

“I had read 1984 earlier and found it quite interesting. Didn’t know it was a Sci-Fi. It is only after DBC(Delhi Book Club) announced their next meet theme – Sci-fi – did I realize that I had already read one. So for the upcoming meet I have picked up Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy(HG2G). I like reading novels with music playing in the background. And for this one I keep playing ‘Space Oddity’ by David Bowie. I am liking the HG2G. It’s not as intriguing as 1984 but it’s been a pleasant ride up-till now. Or am I concluding too early ? Let me finish reading it. And let’s hear what others have to say about this book at Delhi Book Club next meet.”

When DBC announced the topic of the upcoming meet as sci fi – I immediately knew which to recommend for those new to the genre ; 2001 a space odyssey by Arthur C Clarke. When a book boasts of being the greatest science fiction epic of our time, living up to those words is no mean feat! Especially when you consider that this was written ~50 years ago when even the first moon landing hadn’t taken place, the author’s descriptions of   interplanetary expeditions and Artificial Intelligence are commendable!! So much so that even the titans of science today (Elon Musk, Bill Gates Et all) refer to this work with awe and respect. Do yourself a huge favor and pick this up!

Recommendations on the group by other members –

  • Rendezvous with Rama
  • The Time Machine – H.G.Wells
  • Undying Mercenaries Series by BV Larson ( Talks about Aliens Vs Humans but the rake is very different, wuite modern and story is extremely unique! You will get hooked on even if you don’t like SCIFI! ~ Manav)
  • Expeditionary Force Series by Craig Alanson (( Talks about Aliens Vs Humans but the rake is very different, quite modern and story is extremely unique! You will get hooked on even if you don’t like SCIFI! ~ Manav)
  • Watchman by Alan Moore
  • Childhood’s end by Arthur C Clarke
  • Stranger in a strange land
  • Fahrenheit 451
  • Frankenstein
  • The Martian
  • Artemis

Hope all you non Sci Fi readers have something to pick on after this. I surely take back Arthur C Clarke as an author to read. So which one are you going to pick!?

  1. Wow,
Such an amazing collection for sure. Looks like I am done with my book researching on Google. This looks like a good alternative for sure.
    Looking forward to the meetup.
